My research integrates technical and human-centered approaches, focusing on areas such as AI ethics, value-sensitive design, human-AI collaboration. I combine skills in AI technologies, ethical design, and extended reality with a strong understanding of policy implications and societal impacts. My background in participatory and speculative design enables me to facilitate meaningful collaboration between diverse groups, ensuring policies are grounded in real-world needs.
With over a decade of experience in leading interdisciplinary research, community-driven innovation, and complex cultural projects, I bring a proven track record of transforming data into actionable insight, facilitating cross-sector collaboration, and embedding social impact into creative practice. As an interdisciplinary practitioner and researcher at the intersection of emerging media, extended reality and performative arts, I bring a co-creative and participatory perspective to research, art practice and teaching. I implement different research methods such as research-creation and qualitative and quantitative research methods in impact oriented practice via embedded and embodied design, and creation of educational and knowledge mobilization tools aimed at different stakeholders to create measurable results.

My creative and research process
Creative approaches
I am an experience designer, a researcher and media artist whose practice bridges embedded design, human-computer interaction, embodied technology and AI ethics. With a background in film, theatre and performance studies and a PhD focusing on affective computing, virtual, augmented and mixed reality and physiological interfaces, my work investigates the entanglement of bodies and systems — emotional, technical, political. I create participatory environments that challenge the boundaries between users and their environments, performer and audience, exploring how biometric sensing and algorithmic processes can generate new forms of agency, intimacy, and collective resonance.
Embodiment and Biometrics in XR
My background in theatre and performance studies has significantly influenced my approach to embodiment, spatialization, and interaction design. My doctoral research on affect recognition exemplifies this commitment. By exploring the implications of affective AI and physiological computing, I critically examine how affective technologies shape user experience, agency, and ethical considerations in HCI. The integration of sensors and interactive technologies fundamentally reconfigures agency, perception, and interaction and thus it has potential to affect health. Through this process, shared affect and emotional states emerge among participants, forming new modes of connection and engagement.
Collaboration, co-creation, participatory design
I advocate for a co-creative and participatory approach to creation, research and teaching. My experience in research-creation methodologies has shown me the value of collaborative work in fostering empathy, embracing diverse perspectives, and reducing ego-driven approaches to problem-solving. By involving different stakeholders in ideation, prototyping, hands-on design and research processes, I encourage critical thinking, creativity, and interdisciplinary learning. I view co-creation as an emancipatory approach that challenges the constraints imposed by dominant media, language, and creative paradigms. This principle extends across my creative practice teaching and research, ensuring that the individuals who engage with technology also have a hand in shaping it.
Value Embedded Design
Rather than treating ethics as an external constraint imposed post-development, I conceptualize its implementation as an embedded design practice—one that ensures value alignment from the outset. This includes practices such as AI life cycle approaches, documentation practices, and the implementation of ethical labeling systems for AI technologies.
By integrating ethical frameworks within both systemic processes and user interactions, embedded design fosters transparency, explainability, and user accessibility. It transforms abstract ethical concerns into tangible, interactive experiences, enabling users to engage with the underlying mechanics of AI decision-making. This approach ensures that ethics is not relegated to policy documentation or external oversight but is instead woven into the lived experience of technology use.
about my projects
“The category above all others that advances the creative language of the medium”
Where fine art has a longstanding ecosystem for critical discourse and exhibition and entertainment formats live on in easily accessible consumption pipelines, XR installations are both hard to produce and hard to communicate with audiences about. And yet—for those very reasons—this is arguably the category above all others that advances the creative language of the medium. XR installations redefine how we think about space, narrative, technology, and the relationship between creator and audience.

“imaginary soundscapes and cosmic dream landscapes”
“I immerse myself in the “Symphony of Noise“. Michaela Pňačeková and her team, consisting of writers, programmers and the composer Phivos-Angelos Kollias, have created an interactive world in which the imaginary soundscapes of Matthew Herbert, cosmic dream landscapes, the sounds and movements of the participants and Kollias’ compositions blend together uniquely again and again. Based on Herbert’s compositions of everyday sounds, the creators play with perceptions on the one hand, and with the possibilities of creating narratives using algorithms on the other.”
